Ultraviolet Radiation(UV):
Light emmitted from of the sun which is harmful to the skin and eye. The wavelengths of the light, only sightly higher than what we see as the color violet; hence the name ultraviolet
The ozone layer around the earth is a layer of triatomic molecules made of three oxygen atoms. This filters light from the sun, including much of the harmful UV light from reaching the
earths surface. The ultraviolet radiation that reaches the earth is known as UVA and UVB .
UVA is an ultraviolet ray that stays approximately the same all year round. Many consider this
the more dangerous of the two types as it reaches deeper into the skin than UVB. It also goes through light clothing, windows, hats, etc. UVA causes the skin and eyes to burn which can cause
cancer and cataracts.
UVB is an ultraviolet ray that is strongest in the summer, as part of the earth is closest to the sun during this time. UVB is known as the tanning ray because it causes the
skin to darken when exposed.
